Tierpark (zoo number 2)

Ok, so yesterday I gave you a run down on Berlin Zoo, in the centre of Berlin and today I'll give you the inside info on Tierpark- zoo number 2!

Tierpark is a little further out. From Alexanderplatz it's 10 stops on the U5 (still within zone AB if you have the pass) and the stop is named after the zoo- Tierpark, so you really can't go wrong. The metro stops in front of the zoo, so it couldn't be easier! Although 10 stops sounds a lot, it's not, really...we play games to pass the time and in just over 20mins you are there
Ok, so at the end of our day at Berlin Zoo we went to do the annual passes ( total amount €195- this is including the €50 we had paid for our day ticket and this includes- Berlin Zoo, Aquarium (that has its entrance beside the zoo) and Tierpark- so 3 places to visit as much as we want for a year, bonus! There is the option to get a pass for just Zoo and Aquarium (without Tierpark) but trust me Tierpark is totally worth it.

Tierpark is a HUGE park! Families go there to spend the day with their very professional picnics, little kids take their 'balance bikes', dogs are allowed (for obvious reasons have to be kept on a lead) and it's a really nice place to spend a summer's (or spring) day. Berliner's are pros when it comes to days out...really, they take it seriously.
Giulliano and I are seriously considering investing in one of these hahahahaha

We see so many families (dad's) pulling these around. They are usually filled with a kid or two (or three) and are filled to the brim with everything a picnic should have! It's tempting...it's in my Amazon basket, so who knows hahahaha

Tierpark rent this type of wooden hand cart- it costs €5 for the day but you need to pay €10 deposit (so you get that back when you hand it back in) You'll see lots of these around the park, generally with a small child lying down and they take their pillows, blankets etc, looks pretty cosy!
I must be a horrible parent because I make my kids walk hahahahahaha (and carry their own bags!)

I must admit the good thing about having the yearly pass is the option to just go for a couple of hours and then head back home (before the 'I'm tired' sets in) We have been twice already and haven't managed to see the whole park yet. It's nice when you don't have to rush nor feel like you have to see everything in one day because you've paid a day ticket.
We always go after lunch and the kids take their backpacks with their snacks and water. Snack time on our outings is part of the fun, because I let the kids have things that I wouldn't normally allow during the week!

Tierpark also has a petting zoo and the kids had a great time with the goats and sheep
My dad says that Rafa looks ready to run if the sheep moves hahahah

There is a great selection of animals to see
Rhinos
Giugiu doing an elephant impression
The polar bears were very active
Baby elephants were so sweet

Again, you can get so close to the animals, which makes it so much more exciting- although I'm not sure if I would say this was a safe distance-
hahahahaha- seriously...anyone could stick their hand in that leopard's cage!! There is one thing we have noticed in Germany- there is a lot of trust (everywhere!) So, I guess the zoo just trusts that you are not stupid enough to go under that little barrier which is the only thing keeping you from having a close encounter with the leopard!!
Tierpark is a lot better than Berlin Zoo when it comes to the big cats, there is a really big section for them and it was the highlight for Rafael

The second time we went Rafael really wanted to see the crocodiles and snakes

The crocodile section is really hot (probably nice place to get warm in the winter hahahaha), and I was expecting a little more crocodiles, we didn't see any really big ones! But the kids enjoyed it.

Tierpark is fun because as well as a zoo it is a park, so it's a really nice place to walk around, lie down, sit, read, sleep, climb trees, have a picnic and relax. I'm not sure how inclined I'll be to walk around in the winter, but we'll see! :P

The huge, giant chairs are amazing. No trip
is complete without a 20min snooze here!

For me one of the highlights of Tierpark is the little train. It is fun to drive around the park seeing the animals. Don't expect anything Disney scale, but definitely a lot of fun!

Tierpark also has a playground, but we have yet to use it because it's under refurbishment (seriously guys, this should have been done before the nice weather set it!!!) Of course we'll be back and I'll come back to give you our impressions!

There are places to eat also, however, we've never used them so not sure how reasonable or unreasonable the prices are! Will check them out on our next trip!! I'd say if you can, always go with the picnic option because it's likely that the prices will be expensive! Or do what we do, go after lunch and just take a snack to enjoy! In the hot weather, lots of water, you're going to walk a lot!

Our next Tierpark trip will be to see the monkeys (and hopefully the playgound!)

Tierpark- one of our favourite Berlin places to go, things to see! 10 out of 10
